harris teeter free milk catalina
free milk catalina prints after scanning the smart balance milk 1/2 gallon.
i went to the davidson harris teeter.
here's how to do the deal:
use the self checkout.
scan your 1/2 gallon of smart balance milk. (this was on sale last week, but that really doesn't matter).
after you scan the milk, a catalina for FREE half gallon of smart balance milk appears.
choose the "pay now" option.
it will ask if you have coupons.
choose "yes" and give the free coupon to the checkout person.
you will end up with a balance of 7¢ (tax)!!!
i have no idea how long this will last...
i don't know if you would get more than one free milk coupon if you scanned them all in the same transaction. i did 3 separate transactions and got 3 half gallons of milk for 21¢.
also, a catalina for $2 off 2 half gallons will print.
save for later!

public service announcement: COLONOSCOPY
thanks for jumping over!
almost 5 years ago, my mother died of colon cancer at age 71.
she had not visited a doctor for any reason in 40 years (since my younger brother was born).
she got really sick, really fast as it had spread to her brain and who knows where else.
she died within 6 weeks.
i realize that's how she wanted it, she didn't like intervention and her death was quick and relatively painless.
for her.
you see, the suffering is for those left behind...especially for my father, who was her totally devoted husband of almost 50 years.
he is still lost without her.
sometimes, i feel a little angry with her for that.
colon cancer is highly treatable and many times avoidable with early detection.
that means colonoscopy!
i just had one today and wanted to share with you that is was not that bad at all.
when i went for a physical this spring, my doctor advised that i go ahead and have a screening colonoscopy because of my mother's history, even though i am only 46.
most people can wait until 50 if they don't have symptoms or risk factors.
i was hesitant and told him i would check with my insurance company.
well, since it is preventive, they cover 100%.
great, i had no excuses.
my neighbor had recently had his first "screening" and used dr mike campbell and lake norman regional medical center. he was pleased, so i had my doctor (steve ferguson) set the appointment.
i went and talked to dr campbell, we mostly talked about our kids and his upcoming mission trip to africa. he listened to my heart and then i scheduled the procedure for tuesday july 13.
that was it.
so late last week, i went to target to pick up the HALFLYTELY "colon prep".
too bad there were not any gift card deals going on :)
if you have to pick one of these up, take your reusable shopping bag. it comes in a big box that says "bowel prep kit" in huge letters.
you will want to hide that.
while you are shopping, pick up the following items too:
moist toilet wipes
air freshner or a scented candle
A&D ointment
straws
true lemon crystallized lemon
tucks pads or witch hazel
any clear liquids you might enjoy including...
-popsicles and jello (not red or purple)
-clear broths or boullion
-juices or flavored waters
*it's also a good idea to plan ahead as to what your family will have for dinner that night.
i didn't really think of that beforehand.
thankfully i had some beef stew in the freezer that DH just heated in the microwave.
on monday july 12, i enjoyed a clear liquid diet starting in the morning.
i was kind of nervous so really the only thing i drank all day was some capri sun.
i missed my coffee because i like to have a little milk with mine and milk was not on the list.
around 10 am, you pop a couple laxative pills. i think they are the same thing as ducolax, they are included with the kit.
go ahead and mix up the liquid stuff now.
put it in the refrigerator. the colder the better.
the pills may start the action, it did for me.
then around 4 pm, start drinking the 2 liters of solution.
it's made up of PEG-3350 (miralax), salt, baking soda, and potassium chloride (which is sometimes used as a water softener!).
anyway, this solution cleans out your bowels while hopefully maintaining your electrolyte balance.
also in the package are 4 flavor packs.
my research told me to stay away from those.
after reading the ingredients on the back of the packs, including artificial flavorings and other weird stuff that i would not ordinarily consume, i pitched it.
i tasted the drink plain.
it was like soapy, salty water.
dr campbell told me i could use crystal light if i wanted.
i tried that in the first 8 oz.
too sweet.
next glass i tried using some "true lemon" that i got free at harris teeter not too long ago :)
it is crystallized lemon, 100% natural. that was much more tolerable.
next time i may get "true lime" and go for the margarita effect!
i kept switching my container of fluid from freezer to refrigerator.
trust me, the colder the better.
i poured it over crushed ice and used a straw.
i didn't gag.
and i made it through.
now the real fun began.
by 7:30 or 8 pm, i was cleaned out.
i had read it's like peeing out of your butt.
perfect description.
when you are cleaned out, there's no mucous, no nothing, just looks like pee.
i laid on the couch, watching youtube videos (did you know harry smith of cbsnews did an on-air colonoscopy? and you can see it on youtube!).
i was drained.
i slept well.
i got up and weighed myself, thinking about how skinny i must be.
i only lost 2 pounds.
my charming husband said, "i guess you weren't that full of crap after all".
i had to be at the hospital at 7 am for my 8 o'clock procedure.
all the nurses and techs were so nice.
they asked health history questions and started an IV.
the anesthesiologist came in and asked a few questions.
i didn't know, but my husband would have been able to come sit with me while i waited for my turn.
but he left and got his leaking tire fixed, which was fine by me, because i wasn't feeling like talking anyway.
when it was my turn, the nurse came to get me.
her name was lisa lamascola. our son's had played legion baseball together last summer!
so we talked about baseball as she wheeled my stretcher. they put some oxygen on me with a nasal canula, and a device on my finger to read my oxygen levels.
the anesthesiologist pushed some drugs through my IV. it was propofol and it was good stuff!
the very next thing i remember, i was back in the holding area. i woke up wide awake, no nausea, no gas pains, no wierdness at all. it was just as if i woke up in my own bed!
dr campbell came in for a second and said everything went well. he removed one hyperplastic polyp and they would send that off. (i came home and googled "hyperplastic polyp" and it means benign. but it's these kind of polyps that can turn in to cancer).
the nurse offered me some graham crackers and a drink.
i got dressed and warren and i were leaving the hospital by 9.
i'm still not too hungry.
but i feel just fine.
and my husband thanked me.

anyway, this solution cleans out your bowels while hopefully maintaining your electrolyte balance.
also in the package are 4 flavor packs.
my research told me to stay away from those.
after reading the ingredients on the back of the packs, including artificial flavorings and other weird stuff that i would not ordinarily consume, i pitched it.
i tasted the drink plain.
it was like soapy, salty water.
dr campbell told me i could use crystal light if i wanted.
i tried that in the first 8 oz.
too sweet.
next glass i tried using some "true lemon" that i got free at harris teeter not too long ago :)
it is crystallized lemon, 100% natural. that was much more tolerable.
next time i may get "true lime" and go for the margarita effect!
i kept switching my container of fluid from freezer to refrigerator.
trust me, the colder the better.
i poured it over crushed ice and used a straw.
i didn't gag.
and i made it through.
now the real fun began.
by 7:30 or 8 pm, i was cleaned out.
i had read it's like peeing out of your butt.
perfect description.
when you are cleaned out, there's no mucous, no nothing, just looks like pee.
i laid on the couch, watching youtube videos (did you know harry smith of cbsnews did an on-air colonoscopy? and you can see it on youtube!).
i was drained.
i slept well.
i got up and weighed myself, thinking about how skinny i must be.
i only lost 2 pounds.
my charming husband said, "i guess you weren't that full of crap after all".
i had to be at the hospital at 7 am for my 8 o'clock procedure.
all the nurses and techs were so nice.
they asked health history questions and started an IV.
the anesthesiologist came in and asked a few questions.
i didn't know, but my husband would have been able to come sit with me while i waited for my turn.
but he left and got his leaking tire fixed, which was fine by me, because i wasn't feeling like talking anyway.
when it was my turn, the nurse came to get me.
her name was lisa lamascola. our son's had played legion baseball together last summer!
so we talked about baseball as she wheeled my stretcher. they put some oxygen on me with a nasal canula, and a device on my finger to read my oxygen levels.
the anesthesiologist pushed some drugs through my IV. it was propofol and it was good stuff!
the very next thing i remember, i was back in the holding area. i woke up wide awake, no nausea, no gas pains, no wierdness at all. it was just as if i woke up in my own bed!
dr campbell came in for a second and said everything went well. he removed one hyperplastic polyp and they would send that off.

RaNdOm grocery thoughts for this week
i've had some great shopping trips since wednesday and have almost everything for DS's high school graduation cookout on june 12.
very happy about that!
here are some random things that are swirling in my head:
food lion:
the kraft salad dressing deal is great even with no coupons.
i have done multiple transactions buying 4 salad dressings at $1.66 each and another item from the $5/5 kraft deal. (see jenny's list here of what else is included)
there is, however, a tearpad (i got mine at the davidson HT) for $1 off produce wyb 2 kraft dressings.
so today i got a free red onion and bananas with my dressing deal.
i have been rolling my $3 catalina and spending very little out of pocket.
i think i will end up getting some kraft mayo sometime this week.
it's on sale for $2.50 and part of the deal.
so would end up being $1.50 for the big jar of mayo.
gonna need that for pasta and potato salads this summer.
oh that reminds me.
there is a tearpad at food lion near the potatoes that gets you some free maries potato salad dressing (located in the first part of the produce section) when you buy a bag of red or yukon gold potatoes.
red potatoes are on sale for $2.99 for 5 lb.
did i tell you about the food lion shrimp that is bogo this week?
i get the EZ peel jumbo for $4.99 and make this wonderful spicy shrimp from the pioneer woman's website.
it really is easy to peel.
and you don't have to use that much butter.
but you can :)
scott paper towels are on sale $4.77 for an 8 pack.
i have gotten 3 $1.50/1 scott towels coupon from the coupon scanner kiosk thing.
makes for cheap paper towels!
$3.27 for 8 rolls.
i also got a $1/1 kraft cheese (which is part of the 5/5 deal) from the kiosk.
try your luck! and i always look through the ones others have discarded.
harris teeter:
along with the great solo paper plates/cups deal, vanity fair plates are also on sale for $2.
the are the absolute nicest sturdiest plates on the market.
use the 50¢/1 from the 3/14 RP to get them for a dollar.
nestle coffee mate creamer is on sale for $1.66 until 6/8 i believe.
use the 50¢/1 from the 5/2 SS.
final price 66¢
VO5 shampoo is on sale for 69¢ this week.
don't know how good it is, but we are almost out!
it smelled good.
and don't forget to pick up the tearpad coupon for the produce when you buy 2 kraft dressings (to use at food lion).

i also picked up a pack of boneless skinless chicken breasts ($1.79/lb) for $2.82.
the total was over $18.
then she scanned my mvp card.
then the $5 came off.

and i had my "save $3 on your next order" from yesterday's dressing catalina.
grand total (drum roll please)
93¢!!!
and a catalina printout good for tomorrow's trip :)

food lion update
looks like food lion has some kinks to work out with the $5/5 promotion.
read about it here.
the kraft dressings are not working (they should fix that) and the kool-aid packets do not work (no surprise on that one).
so, i would wait a few hours, check back to the above forum and see how things shake out.

harris teeter $20 grocery credit for new/transferred prescriptions!
you may have noticed at the bottom of your harris teeter receipts a blurb that states, "new pharmacy customer reward! coupon off your next $20 purchase, up to 5 transferred or new RX at this HT only, thru 8/31/10. see pharmacy for details."
i read this and thought that you had to have 5 prescriptions for the $20.
since DS had his wisdom teeth removed on apr 2, i had filled 3 prescriptions for him on apr 1.
so i decided to transfer my little antibiotic prevention prescription to HT and then maybe get to the 5 before 8/31.
i had it all wrong!
when i picked up my prescription, the pharmacist (preeti, who is very sweet, knowledgeable, and helpful) said, " i have good news!". i love how the folks at the davidson HT adore their customers :)
i knew that i wouldn't have to pay out of pocket, because that's how our insurance works.
i said, "it's free?"
she said, "yes, and you get a $20 credit for groceries!"
now i was confused.
i knew that i had only had 4 prescriptions.
she explained to me, "you get $20 for each prescription, up to 10 per household."
so, i asked her about my son's prescriptions, filled on april 1st.
she checked her computer, while asking me, "he had his wisdom teeth out, right?"
again, i love my davidson HT.
she said, "yes, you get $20 for each of those prescriptions too, we just didn't have the punch cards when you had them filled!"
so i ended up with $80 in credits for groceries.
WOW.
so in 10 minutes, i went from only looking for the "free with coupon items" (tomorrow is payday, nuf said), to "how can i spend $20?"
*you can only redeem one $20 reward per transaction.
of course i had my list, ready for payday, and all my coupons.
so i ended up spending $3.52 for $81.72 worth of groceries!
and my cashier was genuinely happy for me.
the end.
until tomorrow.

cute zippered pouches for the cash envelope system
i've been keeping the cash in some ziploc bags, but when we go out shopping it can be kind of embarrasing and it's hard to zip the bag back while still discreetly concealing it in your purse.
so i saw this link to etsy on a blog i occasionally read called budgets are sexy.
aren't these cute?
i have decide to try and make some.
next time you see me, ask me if i did yet.
i want to be held accountable.
here's a tutorial on how to make them.
i'm hoping some one will post a printable coupon for hancock fabrics here.

God gave me you
dedicated to my DH, warren :)
dave barnes writes amazing "family" love songs.
about falling in love, being in love, and staying in love.
(dave's wife appears in the video at the end)
my husband i are blessed to have this kind of love.
not because we were just lucky.
not because we really work at it.
because we pray for it, we choose to have it, we won't have it any other way.
i read this article recently and i thought it was excellent.
it's called "anyway love".
it encourages us to love like Jesus, not "because",
but "anyway".

another excellent trip to food lion.
the best part was the london broil.
i had the text coupon for $2 off/$10 , then i checked the kiosk at the front of the store...coupon there for $1 off/$10!
so for a 2.33 lb london broil
regularly $10
on sale for $4.62
-$2 text coupon
-$1 kiosk coupon
i ended up paying just $1.62!
a couple other deals:
there is a coupon at the kiosk for $1/$10 holly farms chicken, which is on sale this week for $1.59/lb.
remember, the $10 qualifying purchase is before the mvp discount.
you will have to buy 2 packages, because the pre mvp cost is around $6-7.
sale price around $3 a pack.
sunchips on sale for $2.99
buy 2, get a free food lion reusable grocery bag.
i had a "free" bag coupon from facebook.
so for $2.99 i got 2 bags of chips and a bag.
there is a "buy 10, get $10 back" promotion on kellogg's, sunshine, morningstar farms, and keebler. i used this deal with some $2/2 cracker coupons from a tearpad, a poptart coupon from the 3/28 RP , and a morningstar farms coupon from the harris teeter penquin.
it's hard to tell what exactly is included in this, they have a picture posted, but it says "select varieties".
this is an instant rebate, not on your next order.
jif natural peanut butter $2.35
use the $1/1 FLIP
final price $1.35
natures place organic beans $1.38
use the $1/1 FLIP
final price 38¢
overall, i spent $21.54 and saved a whopping $49.19 :)

i'm gonna use mine on organic beans, which sell for a little over $1, but this would be great for pasta, milk, lots of things!
*note*
there is a big black rectangle that prints after the coupon, so use a short sheet of paper or press cancel after the coupon prints.
food lion corporate has been emailed by the folks at hot coupon world so hopefully they will fix it.
i think that has been fixed!

cheese deal at harris teeter
buy 3 kraft cheese, get $3 off instantly.
beside the cheese at HT there are 75¢/1 coupons for the 100 calorie packs of cheese. unfortunately, these start with a 9 and will not double.
so look for blinkies at food lion (not sure they have them, i have not been) or i found a tearpad at lowes foods for 75¢/1.
they have these blinkies at food lion too (shearers road).
these 100 calorie packs are priced at $2.79.
buy 3, use 3 coupons...
final price 29¢ each.
i'm thinking these would be good to toss in a salad or for snacks.
thanks jane!

food lion 4/16
i went up to the food lion on shearer's road because it's PAYDAY!
had an awesome trip.
here's what i got:
-boneless skinless chicken breasts $1.59/lb
-london broil $1.98/lb
i tried to use the kiosk coupon scanner thing when i went in. it was out of paper i think. when i was loading my groceries into the van, i noticed a $1/$10 on butcher brand beef coupon in a cart in the parking lot. remember these coupons count the price before mvp discount, so that would have worked on the piece of beef i bought, even though i only paid $4.83 for 2.44 lb. so, try your luck at getting that coupon, or if you go today, look in the carts outside!
*UPDATE* i just got a text coupon loaded to my mvp card for $2/$10 beef!
-scotties tissues 99¢
use 2 $1/1 printable here. (make sure to select "no" in the box that asks if you are a regular user of scotties. i had to use 2 computers, it would only let me print one.
stack this with the b2g1f coupon that is in the food lion home & earth booklet located with the sales flyers at the front of the store.
3 boxes of free tissues!
look for the larger packs that are on the bottom shelf.
-free food lion simply living cereal and healthy choice meals.
have you signed up for food lion's text coupons yet?
go here for info...
text FREECEREAL to 467467 to receive a FREE Box of Food Lion Simple Living Cereal. The savings will be loaded directly onto your MVP card (up to a $2.99 value). This offer is good through 5/15.
text CHOICE to 467467 - Get $4 off 2 Healthy Choice frozen dinners added to your MVP card.
the cereal was free already, but the healthy choice dinners were on sale for $2, making them free as well! they had some "all natural" options so i got those.
also, i had a $1/2 coupon for the healthy choice dinners from the 3/28 SS.
so i made $1 :)
NO BEEPS!!!!
-brocolli $1.69/lb
-radishes $1.19/lb (try this chopped salad recipe)
-strawberries $2.50
and i am going to go back, because there is a $1/1 food lion printable jif peanut butter coupon and it is priced at $2.35, even the "natural" kind.
i'm also thinking about getting some more london broil and having them grind it into hamburger. will that work???

food revolution and the evolution of couponing
(see titus 2:3-5).
topic of discussion this morning:
getting babies to sleep
babies weird dry skin
hippos that live under trees
and
jamie oliver's food revolution
my friend erin has been watching this show from it's beginning.
she highly recommended it. last night, DD and i watched 2 45-minute episodes on hulu.
the premise:
jamie goes into a community that has the highest obesity and death rate in the country, to try and change their way of eating....starting with the school kids.
great reality TV.
great reality check.
my SIL shannon commented that the trouble with couponing is sometimes the best deals are JUNK.
agreed.
but if we can save on toilet paper, laundry detergent, and toothpaste, then we can have more money for fresh, wonderful, God-created food.
that's my plan.
check out jamie's website and sign his petition for a healthier america.
and...
check out this coleslaw recipe, made it for dinner tonight. yummy.

lowes food 4/9
i desperately needed chicken so i found the best price in town was at the new lowes.
i don't think i have been there since the grand opening.
the chicken (boneless, skinless breasts) is $1.89/lb and it's the GOOD stuff.
all natural, minimally processed.
sold in packs ranging from $3-4, depending on the weight.
each pack contains 3 pieces.
here are a few lists if you go.

my splurge for today
not hungry jack, the REAL stuff.
this is what i use for cooking.
you can use it for sweet potatoes, salmon, dressings, glazes, creams, frostings, etc.
try substituting maple syrup for brown sugar, yum!
we use the cheap stuff for pancakes and the like, but a tablespoon or two of the real deal is essential when cooking.
maple syrup contains minerals too!
amazon has this 32 oz organic grade B syrup for $14.31 when you sign up for "subscribe and save". i always use this "s&s" to get the lowest price, you can cancel at any time. they will email you before the next shipment, so you have time to cancel, or you can cancel as soon as you get your first order!
here's the link.
