i ended up paying just $1.62!

a couple other deals:

there is a coupon at the kiosk for $1/$10 holly farms chicken, which is on sale this week for $1.59/lb.
remember, the $10 qualifying purchase is before the mvp discount.
you will have to buy 2 packages, because the pre mvp cost is around $6-7.
sale price around $3 a pack.

i had a "free" bag coupon from facebook.
so for $2.99 i got 2 bags of chips and a bag.

there is a "buy 10, get $10 back" promotion on kellogg's, sunshine, morningstar farms, and keebler. i used this deal with some $2/2 cracker coupons from a tearpad, a poptart coupon from the 3/28 RP , and a morningstar farms coupon from the harris teeter penquin.
it's hard to tell what exactly is included in this, they have a picture posted, but it says "select varieties".
this is an instant rebate, not on your next order.

these 100 calorie packs are priced at $2.79.
buy 3, use 3 coupons...
final price 29¢ each.

i went up to the food lion on shearer's road because it's PAYDAY!
had an awesome trip.
here's what i got:
-boneless skinless chicken breasts $1.59/lb

-london broil $1.98/lb
i tried to use the kiosk coupon scanner thing when i went in. it was out of paper i think. when i was loading my groceries into the van, i noticed a $1/$10 on butcher brand beef coupon in a cart in the parking lot. remember these coupons count the price before mvp discount, so that would have worked on the piece of beef i bought, even though i only paid $4.83 for 2.44 lb. so, try your luck at getting that coupon, or if you go today, look in the carts outside!
*UPDATE* i just got a text coupon loaded to my mvp card for $2/$10 beef!

jamie goes into a community that has the highest obesity and death rate in the country, to try and change their way of eating....starting with the school kids.
great reality TV.
great reality check.
my SIL shannon commented that the trouble with couponing is sometimes the best deals are JUNK.
agreed.
but if we can save on toilet paper, laundry detergent, and toothpaste, then we can have more money for fresh, wonderful, God-created food.
that's my plan.

i found a great deal on maple syrup.
not hungry jack, the REAL stuff.
this is what i use for cooking.
you can use it for sweet potatoes, salmon, dressings, glazes, creams, frostings, etc.
try substituting maple syrup for brown sugar, yum!
we use the cheap stuff for pancakes and the like, but a tablespoon or two of the real deal is essential when cooking.
maple syrup contains minerals too!
amazon has this 32 oz organic grade B syrup for $14.31 when you sign up for "subscribe and save". i always use this "s&s" to get the lowest price, you can cancel at any time. they will email you before the next shipment, so you have time to cancel, or you can cancel as soon as you get your first order!

what's cookin'?

i wanted to share some yummy things that we have been making at my house.

DD loves to make dessert on american idol night.
this shortbread recipe is so simple, but so delicious.
the first time i had it was at a summer bible school meeting many, many years ago, where a kind woman named gail invited us over to plan. she served this hot from the oven with iced tea. it was amazing. i got the recipe immediately. this is equally wonderful with coffee or hot chocolate. and with only 3 ingredients (butter, sugar, and flour) you can whip it up anytime.
next, i had to try the pioneer woman's spaghetti and meatball recipe.
it was kind of time consuming...i did use all ground beef and store bought breadcrumbs. it was good, but my favorite part was the simple tomato sauce. i will definately use that again.
finally, last night i had a couple of sweet potatoes that needed to be cooked. i only had two, so decided to make mashed sweet potatoes so there would be plenty for the family. i found this recipe on martha stewart's website, but substituted 8th continent vanilla soymilk (that we got at harris teeter for free during super doubles) for the half and half. it was fabulous, the vanilla in the soymilk really added to the flavor.

then the manager came over.

it worked!
so i was able to use the target printable, the target text, and i also had a manufacturer coupon for $1/2 kraft cheese. the two target coupons came off, but the man. Q didn't even show up :(
but i was too tired to go back in.

what is a catalina?

When you check out at the grocery store, there's a small machine next to the cash register.
This machine prints coupons, ads, announcements of upcoming promos, and OYNO (off your next order) dollars specific to that store.
Catalina machines are found at grocery stores and more recently, at retail stores like Kmart.
If you're doing a Catalina promo, be sure the machine's green light is on to show that it's working before you ring up your promo items.
Catalina coupons and OYNO coupons that print out are usually good for 2 or 4 weeks after they print.

anyway, used both of those to get 4 bottles of dressing ($1.50 each), 2 2-liters of soda (free) and got $3 on my next order.
comes out to 75¢ for the dressing with free soda!

but here's what i learned.
when i went to harris teeter this morning to do the green giant veggie deal, i asked the cashier if they took those "on your next order" coupons.
he said, "we will try it".
it scanned with no beeps!!!

last night, our fellowship group went over to lakeside park to package meals for those in haiti.
we really didn't know what to expect.
we had to bring $5 for the cost of the "food".
did you know that $5 will provide 20 meals for a child?
there were about 300 people on our shift.
5 members of our group gathered around a table where we scooped soy, dehydrated vegetables, vitamin powder and rice into a small bag.
then there were kids who would come and pick up the bags, deliver them to another table where they were weighed, and finally heat-sealed.
it was an amazing production!
we were the final shift for the night and the grand total of meals packaged was over 125,ooo.
these will be in haiti within the next 2 weeks.

harris teeter super doubles...how's it going?

so, how are you doing with super doubles?
i have made three trips so far and doing pretty well.
on wednesday, i took the 2-year-old i have been babysitting, and i want to tip my hat to all you moms with toddlers. she was good, but it's just harder to concentrate!
i spent around $9 and walked out without my receipt, came home and ate 1/2 a box of wheatables.
friday-had a great trip.
spent 26.87, saved 85.95.
this included the sashimi tuna $5.99/lb (they were awesome), cod fillets $4.98/lb, and a hormel pork tenderloin. they were out of stock on some freebies.
today, saturday, went early, 9ish.
did you know that the harris teeter in davidson gets a truck delivery friday night?
so saturday morning is an excellent time to go.
they had lots of meats on clearance.

DH and i had an impromptu valentine's date to the new gagliardo's grill express last night for dinner. DS went to the basketball game and DD got a last minute babysitting offer for her favorite 2 year old.
so, we decided to finally go to gagliardo's.
we have missed it!
we used to love that place when it was open a couple years ago.
we are thrilled that troy and his wife tracy have re-opened the restaurant.
reasons we LOVE gagliardo's:
-it's like 3 minutes from our house. located close to the old hospital.
-we saw so many folks we know, it really is a neighborhood grill.
-the food is amazing and since the food is grilled, there are lots of healthy options, if you choose that route :)
-the remodeled restaurant has the grill right there at the counter where you order. cozy. especially with the snow on friday night.
-with the new set up, the service was super fast. the way they do it now, you walk up to the counter, order your meal and pay, and then sit down and they bring the food to you.
-excellent tea, free refills!
-it's so wonderful to see a family working together.
troy and his bride tracy (i think they were high school sweethearts <3 ) were there with their two daughters.
-they do takeout too.
